Why I Bought That installment 1

Welcome to my new meme called “Why I Bought That.”

I am all about Shopping on Purpose, meaning saving time, money and frustration by filling your closet with clothes that

  1. fill in the gaps of what you need in your wardrobe
  2. coordinate with what you already own–style-wise as well as color
  3. work for your lifestyle and have a reasonable “cost per wear”
  4. fit within your Dominant Color Category
  5. complement your body type.

Add to that “make you feel good.” No one needs to wear clothes that make them feel uncomfortable or awkward, or that they just don’t look good in. You should love what you see in the mirror!

So, yesterday I spent about an hour in a local Bealls Outlet and came out with two tops. I was on the hunt for pants but none of them worked–pants are tricky for me at 5’9″ and possessing hips.

I thought this top was really cute but I only bought one.

fantabulous women why i bought that 1

Blue or black?

Before we even go into the color, let’s talk about Why I Bought That (based on the above list).

  • I needed some versatile tops for spring–chevron is on trend and classic at the same time
  • it can be dressed up or down (jeans for the weekend, with a blazer for work)
  • I can layer it with a jacket or cardigan (also making it multi-seasonal)
  • it’s comfortable and easy to wash (cotton/spandex back, poly front)–and a smoking deal at just $12!
  • the colors and pattern work well for me (a Deep DCC)
  • the style is flattering (loose and flowy but not boxy)–and it’s plenty long

Now are you wondering which one I chose?

The BLACK one!

 Why the black?

Mainly because of #2 above: “coordinates with what you already own–style-wise as well as color.” See below?

fantabulouswomen.com why i bought that 1

  •  I already own black jeans and black Bermuda shorts to wear it with
  • I can wear it more easily with colored jeans or capris like red, turquoise or purple (which I’m on the hunt for)
  • it will go with the accessories I already own like my black shoes, black boots and green purse
  • it will be easy to accessorize with jewelry items I already own

fantabulouswomen.com why i bought that 1

So there you go.

(I may buy a turquoise bubble necklace to go with it, though–but only if it fits all of the criteria, too!)

Next time you’re debating about buying something new, just ask yourself:

  1. Does it fill in the gaps of what I need in my wardrobe?
  2. Does it coordinate with what I already own–style-wise as well as color?
  3. Does it work for my lifestyle and have a reasonable “cost per wear?”
  4. Does it fit within my Dominant Color Category?
  5. Does it complement my body type?

And of course…”do I feel FanTABulous when I wear it?”

I hope this helps you Shop on Purpose. Stay tuned for my next installment!

Five ways to add some holiday WOW to your outfits

Christmas and New Year’s Eve are both quickly approaching.

If you’re like me, you can’t go out and buy new outfits for all of the upcoming occasions and photo ops BUT you want to look and feel amazing.

So, here are five ways to add some holiday WOW to our outfits. Shop your closet first, or treat yourself to something new–a lot of these items are deeply discounted this time of year!

1. Embellish your neck.

Any outfit or coat looks letter with a little pizzazz close to your face. You can wear your most basic pants and top but when you add a festive, sparkly or colorful scarf, it’s a WOW.

fantabulous women holiday wow scarf plaid denim boots

A festive red and green plaid, polka dots or a scarf in your pop color are good places to start. Not sure what your pop colors are? Discover your Dominant Color Category to find out!

2. Add some bling.

Pile on the bracelets, wear your chandelier earrings and add an extra ring or two–the bigger the better. Drag out your costume or vintage jewelry and even add a pin to your coat lapel while you’re at it.

Carry a sequined or glittery clutch or purse, too.

And wear your sequined or glittery shoes! It’s hard to overdo it when it’s the holidays.

3. Wear bright lipstick.

Whether red, plum or bright pink, wear a color that will make you feel fabulous. Almost everyone looks good in true red (with no orange undertones). A blue-based red even makes your teeth look whiter!

Tips:

Exfoliate your lips with a warm washcloth or a gentle sugar scrub so dead skin doesn’t sabotage your look.

Remember: when you go with strong lips, keep your eyes and cheeks toned down.

4. Accessorize your ‘do.

Headbands, flower clips and feathers are “in” right now, so sweep your hair up or to the side and add a little flourish. You can even apply colored gel (pink! purple!) or tinsel! Fun!

holiday wow vintage rose wraps headband fantabulous women

5. Show off your legs.

Wear patterned tights, your highest heels or apply body lotion with glitter in it. You’ll feel flirty and feminine and might even walk a little taller.

Bonus! 6. Wear anything with feminine details, like ruffles or lace. It’s so pretty–and festive. It’s especially fun to mix in fancy with plain, like jeans with a lace top or black velvet pants with a simple tunic.

A few other tips:

  • Plan your outfits ahead of time and hang them in your closet to avoid digging for stockings or an errant earring at the last minute.
  • Take care of your skin, particularly when the weather is cold or windy. Drink plenty of water and hydrate, especially over night. Remember to take care of your feet, knees and elbows, too.

What can you add to your outfits for some holiday WOW?

Back-To-School Supplies for Mom

fantabulous women tabitha dumas back to school for mom

Back-to-school supplies for Mom.

This may seem a bit premature for some of you (back to school?!? In July?!?) but my oldest son is on a modified year-round school schedule (two weeks off after each grading period and seven weeks off in summer) and starts 2nd grade on July 22nd.

My baby is starting second grade!! Eeeeeek!!

Back-to-school time is HERE for us and I realized that I—work-at-home mom and home manager—need to get myself ready!

For me, summer has been a mixed bag. Yes, we got to take a road trip to my home state of Florida at the start of summer and, yes, my older son has kept the younger one occupied during the day so I could log some billable hours, but…we’ve been doing the “stay up late and wake up late” routine but when the boys are up late, I can’t get “real work” done (I need total peace and quiet to write) and my mornings when they’re sleeping in are not very productive. I’ve been lax on housework and meal planning (don’t ask me how many pizza boxes were in the recycle bin this week) and I’m low on energy because of the wacky sleep schedule. Plus, I’ve had to postpone my usual meetings because it’s hard to get child care for both boys.

I’m ready to get back into the school routine.

This year will be unique because on August 5, my younger son will begin preschool so I will have nine hours a week to be foot loose and kid-free. I’ll keep the fancy.

So I need to be ready.

Here are a few tools I assembled to help ME prepare! The idea is to keep things running smoothly and to set yourself up for a wonderful school year. For yourself AND the kids!

Cookbooks and meal planning tools.

Pull out your favorite cookbooks, grab a shopping list and map out your meals for the week (I do pizza, taco soup and pasta almost every week). Mine have to be quick, easy, and kid-friendly (and when I say kid, I mean picky-eater-kid).

fantabulous women tabitha dumas back to school mom meal planning shopping list

New office supplies.

Why should the kids be the only ones who get fresh folders, markers and composition books?? Get some cute folders for filing all of the papers that will soon be coming in from school and treat yourself to some pretty pens and highlighters. Have a day planner handy, too, for writing down PTA meeting times and coffee dates. Remember to schedule in “me time,” too!

fantabulous women tabitha dumas back to school mom supplies calendar me time

Beauty time-savers.

I advise my Mary Kay customers to have an everyday makeup look accessible to grab even if they only have five minutes to spend on their face in the morning. All you need is one or two neutral eye colors, a soft blush, mascara and gloss. I highly recommend the Mary Kay 3-in-1 cleanser, too, because it cleanses, exfoliates and freshens in one step. My other favorite multi-tasking product is the Mary Kay Moisture Renewing Gel Mask. It feels almost like aloe and you can use it as a quick mask or wear it overnight if your skin is dry, inflamed or stressed.

Designate a “mom zone” or “home management zone.”

This is the place to keep paperwork, calendars, to-do lists and things like greeting cards, wrapping supplies and bills all in one spot that is yours alone.

fantabulous women studio home office craft room

As you can see above, I am spoiled—I have a studio/office/craft room (nearly) all to myself but you can use a small desk, a corner of your laundry room or even a closet. For example…

Below is is my “drop and grab zone” between the front door and the garage where I can drop my keys or grab library books on the way in or out, plus a spot for reminders and papers.

fantabulouswomen mom command center

Take a moment to tweak your inspiration board, too, so that the things that inspire you or make you smile are where you can see them regularly.

fantabulous women tabitha dumas back to school mom inspiration board

If you work from home, you may want to reorganize your desk or set up new filing systems–whatever it takes to be efficient and productive.

If you’re a home school mom, now is the time to get your desk and teaching area(s) ready.

There are some fun ideas for work-at-home and home school moms on my Back To School Pinterest board.

And you can’t go back to school without books!

I have found a good many of these at Goodwill.

fantabulous women tabitha dumas back to school mom books

Two of my favorites: “Simple Abundance” by Sarah Ban Breathnach and “Organized Simplicity” by Tsh Oxenreider.

fantabulous women tabitha dumas back to school mom books

For those with a business: “Love is the Killer Ap” by Tim Sanders, “Good to Great” by Jim Collins and “The Power of Uniqueness” by Arthur F. Miller, Jr.

fantabulous women tabitha dumas back to school mom books for business

And for personal development: “By Happy Without Being Perfect” by Alice D. Domar, Ph.D, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families” by Stephen R. Covey and “Take Time For Your Life” by Cheryl Richardson.

You may also need a new tote bag to carry your books in or maybe a pretty new purse for fall. You get a backpack for the kids, why not treat yourself??

Have some fun before the race to Winter Break begins and set yourself up for a wonderful new school year.

Ten Image Tips for Professionals

Most of us aren’t required to look 100% professional 24/7.

It is inevitable that you will run into a colleague at the grocery store when you are still in your workout clothes or at the home improvement store when you are in your yard work clothes. I don’t know anyone who lives their entire life in a suit.

However, for those times when you want to look like the most professional version of yourself, here are some image tips. The main goals are to represent yourself well, to look like you’ve got it together and to not distract anyone with how you look.

professional image tips tabitha dumas

Ladies & Gentlemen

1. Have a mint and save the gum for weekends. Chewing gum just looks silly in a professional environment, plus you may be like me and be tempted to blow bubbles, making you look like an eight-year-old.

2. Put your sunglasses away. You can’t imagine how many times I see people sitting in a meeting with their sunglasses perched on their head. Ladies, sunglasses are NOT a headband.

3. Clean up your shoes. Nothing looks more careless than dirty shoes. If you live somewhere dusty, keep wet wipes handy to clean up before entering a meeting.

4. Keep your nails trimmed and clean. Ladies, nude and light colors look best for your fingers (and use your discretion when it comes to your toes–you can probably get away with bold colors if you prefer).

5. Mind your body language. Maintain proper posture and when someone is speaking, make eye contact, nod and smile as appropriate.

Ladies

6. Don’t overdo the cleavage or the exposed leg. Don’t let your skin be a distraction or affect your credibility. In fact, I recommend against spaghetti straps in the office and even sleeveless tops unless it is very modestly cut. Knee-length skirts or longer are also recommended. Oh, and when you wear a skirt, make sure it is lined or PLEASE wear a slip.

7. Beware of “dress shorts” and even “dress capris,”  meaning fancier shorts and capris that are supposed to be office-worthy (like with pin stripes). Just make sure your overall look says “Professional” and not “about to board a cruise.”

8. Wear some makeup. It is a proven fact that women are considered more confident and competent when they wear simple, flattering makeup. Even out your skin tone with tinted moisturizer or foundation and accentuate your best features with a little mascara, plus a neutral blush and light lip gloss.

Gentlemen

professional man fantabulous image tips for professionals

8. Keep your hair groomed. That means your facial hair, ears and nose, too! Consider waxing that uni-brow and PLEASE trim your long eyebrows.

9. Be bold with color! Don’t shy away from colors other than black, navy or gray. Whether a collared shirt or a dress shirt, most men (especially those of you with salt-and-pepper hair) look great in purple, red, a shade of turquoise and even orange. If your job requires you to be more conservative, consider a purple or pink-hued tie instead.

When you look your best, you will be AT your best!

What do YOU think should be added to this list?

Tips for New Direct Sales Reps

I have loved the direct sales industry since attending Tupperware and Mary Kay home parties with my mom back in the 1980s.

I loved eating the snacks, seeing the products, hearing the consultant’s presentation, playing the games and helping my mom fill out her order form.

fantabulous women direct sales tips

I have always been involved in at least one direct sales company for about ten years now and have hosted countless home parties for my friends and family.

I’m something of a direct sales addict.

In fact, just this month, I became a Senior Consultant with Mary Kay when I added my very first active team member!

In advising her, I got to thinking about what I’ve learned over the years and I thought I’d share it here in case it can help someone who’s just getting started, or maybe give you a new idea if you’re an old pro.

Tab’s Ten Tips for New Direct Sales Consultants

1. Determine your target customer.

Who is she? What is her age group? What phase of life is she in? What are her hobbies and interests? Where does she hang out? What does she value? What are her spending habits?

While you can’t sell to your target customer exclusively, knowing who she is will help you narrow your focus and became an expert at finding her and servicing her needs.

2. Use your catalogs.

Keep one catalog for yourself to make notes on product information and questions people ask.

Give out catalogs freely. Treat them like business cards! You can even provide people with sticky notes so they can mark the items they want to buy. Tell them “If there are more than five, you should host a party!”

Ask a few friends and family members to mark their favorite items to give you an idea of what will be popular so you can educate yourself on those first.

Ask a friend who is also in direct sales if she would give out your catalogs when she delivers orders to her customers–and do the same for her. That’s great cross-promotion!

3. Have a launch party.

Make yourself the hostess so you can reap the hostess rewards to build your collection of samples or inventory.

Invite people personally, whether over the phone or in person. Emails, Facebook event requests and e-vites don’t mean as much as hearing your voice does.

Offer incentives to them when they bring a friend.

Keep the food and drinks simple so the focus stays on the products you’re selling. And eat first so they don’t think about the food during the entire presentation!

Have door prizes and multiple ways to earn entries. People love winning prizes, even if they just cost you $1.

4. Always tell your story about WHY you chose the company you are with and what your goals are.

People will connect to your story and want to help you accomplish your goals. It could also help you attract a new team member!

5. Showcase YOUR favorite products.

People will love what you love! Plus you’ll know all about them and can answer questions people have about them.

6. Remember that YOU are your best advertisement!

Wear your company logo shirts and your name tag.

Use or wear your products as much as possible or carry a bag with clear pockets so you can insert pictures of your products. Be prepared to give your “elevator pitch” when people inquire! (P.S. If you need help with your “elevator pitch,” contact me for a consultation!)

Give your products as gifts.

Hand out samples as much as possible.

7. Find “power partners” with compatible businesses (or people who work with or for your target customer).

These are people who will refer new customers to you and vice versa. This is how you build your customer base beyond your warm market.

8. Embrace the power of social media…but establish boundaries.

Social media is important for communicating with people, offering promotions and keeping your business “top of mind” for your customers…but don’t let it take over your life. Set time limits and eliminate lengthy back-and-forth exchanges with a phone call.

9. Keep it FUN!

Don’t get so caught up in SELLING that for lose your sense of fun in the process. Remember, people are drawn to YOU first, THEN to your products.

10. Lastly, be tenacious and keep at it.

Direct sales consultants are notorious for giving up within the first year, just about the time that business would have really picked up if they had just stuck to it. It takes time for people to be sold on what you do and for you to build your business.

Outlast the competition! Remember why you got started in the first place and never lose your passion.

There is plenty of business for you out there–you just have to go get it!

Do you have questions about direct sales success? Fire away and I will do my best to answer!

Bras For Warm Weather

The warmer weather is upon is and now it is becoming time again for sundresses, tanks and strapless tops.

Ladies, listen up: no one wants to see your bra straps.

Doing a “layered look” with tanks and camis is OK, but exposed bra straps are not. Just this woman’s opinion.

So…what to do??

For most tanks and sleeveless tops, a T strap bra works well. It keeps your straps from showing and from falling down over your shoulders.

fantabulous women racer back bra

They’re also called racer back bras and can look like this, too:

Check this out! You can use these cool clips on a regular bra to MAKE it into a racer back! There’s a clear version available, too. They’re available in the lingerie department of most retail stores, including Target and Walmart.

fantabulous women hide bra straps

Of course, when in doubt, go strapless.

stapless bra fantabulous women warm weather

A convertible bra is also an excellent choice and gives you many options.

Finally, if you’re investing in a good “speciality bra,” buy it to match your skin tone so you can wear it under white, black and everything in between.

Your bra shouldn’t match your clothes–it should match YOU!

Good Reasons to Arrange Your Closet By Color

Closet organization is a personal and somewhat complicated issue.

One option is arranging your closet contents by color.

The picture below represents my tops arranged by color:

White, red, pink, purple, blue, gray, turquoise, green, brown and peach.

fantabulous women closet organization

You’ll notice the same order in the stack of long-sleeved tops on the top shelf as well as in the hanging organizer.

My shoes are arranged by color, too. Silver in the front and brown in the middle row.

Here are some good reasons to arrange your closet by colors:

1. You enjoy wearing color. And I hope you do!

2. You coordinate your outfits based on color {like this one, source FashionistaTrends.com}

FanTABulouswomen closet organization fashionistatrends.com

3. Seeing a rainbow in your closet makes you happy.

If you are one of my ladies who pins color-coordinated outfits on Pinterest, arranging your closet by color is probably a great idea.

Jot down a few of your favorite looks {like the navy, green and white combo pictured above} and go to your closet to put some outfits together.

In the interest of full disclosure, my closet is currently arranged by the type of garment (short-sleeve, long skirt, etc.)–pictures coming soon.
